What is a fire service connection?

A fire service connection is a dedicated water connection used exclusively for firefighting purposes. It provides water specifically to support firefighting efforts and is separate from normal water supply systems used for domestic or commercial purposes. This connection is designed to deliver higher water flows to meet the demands of firefighting equipment.

How do I apply for a fire service connection?

Applying for a fire service connection follows the same steps as applying for a water or sewerage connection.

  1. You can submit your application through SA Water's connection application form here.
  2. Once your application is received, we will assess the water availability at your location to ensure it meets the required standards for firefighting.

What do I need to apply?

To apply for a fire service connection, you must provide the following:

  1. Flow Test and Network Analysis: These two tests test the water flow and pressure at your location, and they must be conducted and reported within the last 12 months.
You can apply for a Flow Test or Network Analysis test here.
  2. A flow test involves physically flowing water through a flow meter equipped with a pressure gauge to measure the available water flow and pressure through a designated fire plug.  This test determines the volume and pressure of water from a fire plug or street hydrant to verify any design requirements for firefighting purposes.

A network analysis is carried out using a hydraulic model. The pressures and flows provided are indicative only and have been derived by theoretical network analysis for normal summer operating conditions. We cannot guarantee that these pressures and flows will be available at all times from the system and accepts no responsibility for any loss or damage that may result from reduced flow or pressure in the mains.

  3. Other Documentation: An internal fire service reticulation plan must be provided and any additional documents that help assist in assessing the water supply and any special conditions that may apply at the property or location. More information can be found in our application checklist.

Are there any conditions to a fire service connection?

The Metropolitan Fire Service (MFS) and the Country Fire Service (CFS) require water infrastructure that complies with the National Construction Code (NCC) (generally Australian Standard 2419 – Fire hydrant installations) for fire-fighting purposes. The NCC permits the use of SA Water infrastructure where the minimum flow and pressure rates can be achieved. In instances where this is not the case, additional onsite infrastructure such as tanks, pumps and hydrants may be required and need to be considered in any design proposal.

We do not guarantee flow rates or water pressure that meet the specific requirements of the NCC and are not responsible for designing or maintaining the network for fire fighting purposes.

How much does a fire service connection cost?

There are costs associated with connecting to our network. A fire service is considered a non-standard connection therefore a fixed quotation, valid for 60 calendar days, will be provided.

Please read our Fees and Charges page to understand the costs associated with applying, assessing and implementing a fire service.
