I'm a tenant. What are my responsibilities?

Unlike other utilities, water is always connected to a property, so tenants don’t need to contact us to set up an account. Residential tenants do not have an individual water account with us. Instead, we send the water bill directly to the landlord (property owner) or the managing agent.

As a tenant, you may be responsible for paying for your water usage and supply charges. Your landlord or managing agent will explain your payment responsibilities as part of your lease agreement. For more information about your rights and responsibilities, visit the sa.gov.au website. This website outlines what tenants are legally required to pay and provides details on fees and charges that landlords can pass on.

When you move out, your landlord or managing agent can take a final read of the meter and calculate the remaining charges for your water use

We also offer the following support options for tenants:

Payment Assistance - Help paying your bills

If you're having trouble paying your water bill, there are several support options available:

  • Tenants with a low income or those who hold an eligible government concession card may be able to receive a water rate reduction.
The Department of Human Services provides more information on concessions, which can be accessed online or by calling the Concessions Hotline at 1800 307 758 (TTY 8226 6789).
  • Through your managing agent or landlord, you can contact our Payment Assistance team to explore payment assistance options like payment extensions or payment plans. For more information, visit our Help Paying My Bill page.

Plumbing help

Knowing what to look for can help you identify leaks or other plumbing issues, such as sewer overflows or blockages. If you're dealing with leaking taps, toilets, or other water-related problems, your landlord or managing agent can arrange for a licensed plumber to fix these issues.
