How do I prepare for a water outage during planned or unplanned works?

How do I prepare for a water outage during planned or unplanned works?

Why your water supply may be interrupted?

Water supply may be interrupted for several reasons, including:

  • Maintenance or repair of the water network.
  • Augmentations (upgrades) to improve infrastructure.
  • Emergencies such as main breaks or leaks.
  • Health and safety requirements during works.
  • Regulatory restrictions, such as those imposed during droughts.

What should I do before a planned water outage?

We will notify you within four days of a planned water outage. We often do this by a letter drop in the area that will be impacted by the work.

Here are some steps you can take to minimise inconvenience during planned works:

  1. Store water in clean containers: Keep several litres of water aside for drinking, cooking, and hygiene needs (Approximately 4-5 litres per person per day is recommended).
  2. Fill a bathtub or buckets: Use this water for flushing toilets or cleaning.
  3. Shower and do laundry ahead of time: Ensure you have clean clothes available for the duration of the outage.
  4. Turn off water-dependent appliances: This includes dishwashers and washing machines to avoid damage during the outage
  5. Subscribe to SMS or email updates: You can find an outage on our Faults and outages map. Search for your address, and click on the outage to subscribe by entering your mobile phone number or email address.

What do I do when water is restored?

After the water supply resumes:

  1. Run your outdoor tap until the water runs clear. This helps flush out any discoloured water and air trapped in the pipes.
  2. Check for leaks or dripping taps that may have started due to pressure changes.

What happens if the outage is unplanned?

For unplanned interruptions, we will try to restore service as soon as possible.

For major outages, alternative drinking water may be provided. Depending on the outage and location, water will be provided at communicated community pick up points or delivered.

Customers can also report significant water issues or disruptions by contacting the SA Water Customer Care Centre at 1300 SA WATER (1300 729 283).
