Water infrastructure construction underway in Ceduna

SA Water has begun construction of a new 4,500,000 litre water storage tank and associated pipeline in Ceduna on South Australia’s West Coast, which will improve drinking water security and water quality for more than 1,800 local homes and businesses.

The $37 million project, delivered together with the utility’s construction partner McConnell Dowell Diona joint venture, will also include the installation of a 12 kilometre underground pipeline to connect the new tank to Ceduna’s existing water supply network.

The tank will be built adjacent to existing water tanks on Kalanbi Road, while the pipeline will be installed below a combination of private properties and road reserves.

SA Water’s Acting General Manager of Sustainable Infrastructure Peter Seltsikas said this investment in water infrastructure reflects the utility’s commitment to providing reliable water services to its customers.

“This project will provide more storage capacity in Ceduna's water network to help ensure a secure supply during periods of high demand, while also paving the way for future growth in the town,” Peter said.

Construction of the pipeline and the tank is expected to be complete by later November 2025, subject to weather and any technical constraints. Works will typically occur from Monday to Sunday between 6am and 6pm, with crews working a schedule of two weeks on and one week off.

“We are committed to minimising any construction impacts during the project, such as dust or noise caused by the use of heavy machinery and increased vehicle movement in and out of our worksite and equipment laydown area,” Peter said.

“As work progresses, we will ensure our local customers are notified of any necessary temporary water supply interruptions.

“While our crews are on site, there may also be changes to local traffic conditions, with these measures in place to protect the safety of our people and people travelling through the area.

“Throughout construction, we will be working closely with local businesses, engaging suppliers and contractors in the area wherever possible, who will provide a range of services such as accommodation, cleaning services, quarry materials, plant hire and building supplies.

“From equipment hire and materials supply to accommodation and catering, this project is creating flow-on opportunities for local businesses and contributing to the region’s economy.

“We appreciate the fantastic support from the local community for this important project and look forward to delivering long-term benefits for Ceduna."
