SA Water locks in new grassroots partnerships

From Mount Gambier and Monarto to South Australia's largest agricultural show, SA Water is partnering with eight exciting community groups making a difference across the state, as part of its 2022-23 Community Partnerships Program.

The annual program provides a total of $75,000 in financial support towards successful initiatives or events focused on environmental sustainability, climate change, and improving community health and wellbeing through effective water use.

SA Water's General Manager Strategy, Engagement and Innovation Nicola Murphy said this year’s program saw more than 80 applications from groups in regional and metropolitan areas.

"Our Community Partnerships Program is all about helping groups and events of different shapes and sizes achieve positive outcomes for their local communities, and following a terrific response for applications from the community, this year's recipients are a perfect fit,” Nicola said.

"Ranging from a new aquaponics system at Blyth's local primary school to the creation of an urban wetland in the South East, our 2022-23 partners are all harnessing water to make their local community a better place.

“The projects are focusing on sustainable water practices and creating cool, green spaces in their community which builds on SA Water’s vision for sustainability.

"Many grassroots groups, events and organisations have faced challenges throughout recent years due to COVID-19, and we can't wait to work together with this year's program recipients to achieve great outcomes.”

This year, SA Water’s Community Partnerships Program includes:

  • Supporting BioR on creating a watering habitat at Frahns Farm in Monarto
  • Establishing a large-scale aquaponics set-up with Blyth Primary School
  • Creating a student-led community garden at Compass Catholic Community in Davoren Park
  • Developing a large community garden with the Nangwarry Primary School
  • Installing new water-saving garden beds on the Fleurieu Peninsula with Port Elliot’s Town and Foreshore Improvement Association
  • Creating a seasonal urban wetland at St Martin’s Lutheran College in Mount Gambier
  • Working together with Port Pirie’s Uniting Country SA on a waterwise sensory garden
  • Designing a feature garden display with the Royal Agricultural and Horticultural Society of South Australia Inc. to educate visitors to the Royal Adelaide Show about urban cooling and effective watering
