Port Elliot water main upgrade on track for September completion

SA Water’s water main upgrade along Waterport Road in Port Elliot is now around 75 per cent complete, with the majority of new pipe in the ground and the next stage of works to focus on connecting it to the existing water network.

Nearly all 1,654 metres of the new main has been installed, at depths reaching up to three metres, with the project on target to be completed and the road fully reopened in September.

SA Water’s General Manager of Sustainable Infrastructure Amanda Lewry said the significant length of pipe being laid, along with a need to safely navigate other underground services such as gas and telecommunications is why the project is required to be undertaken over a longer timeframe than usual.

“We understand the duration of these works has caused  inconvenience for the community, however it’s important we get the project right as it’s integral to local growth and ensuring a continued reliable supply of water to our customers,” Amanda said.

“We appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we progress with this critical infrastructure upgrade.

“The next phase of our project will involve several technical tasks, including integrating the new pipe with the existing water network, implementing necessary corrosion control measures and grouting the decommissioned section of main.

“To minimise the need for any temporary supply disruptions, we have procured and installed custom specialist valves. These valves temporarily block the flow of water within the pipe, keeping the pipeline filled until it's time to open the valve and allow water to flow through again.

“Our crews will carry out rigorous testing of the new pipeline to ensure its reliability and full operational capacity. Following this process, we will reinstate Waterport Road bitumen surface, complete with all line markings, signage and posts.”

Until works are complete, for the safety of SA Water crews and people travelling through the area, traffic management will remain in place around the worksite.

“We know that most people do the right thing when it comes to driving safely around where our crews are working on Waterport Road, but unfortunately there have been some instances of speeding and running red lights,” Amanda said.

“For the safety of our people and the local community, we ask residents and road users to please take note of traffic management in place.”
