New water partnership bubbles for Blyth Primary

A new innovative aquaponics system is soon set to call Blyth Primary School home as the result of a new partnership forged with SA Water, as part of the utility's 2022-23 Community Partnerships Program.

Financial support received will enable the school to establish the aquaponics system on-site to educate students about the basics of growing vegetables and herbs in a water-efficient way.

SA Water's annual program provides a total of $75,000 in financial support to successful projects or events focused on environmental sustainability, climate change and improving the state's health and wellbeing.

SA Water's General Manager Strategy, Engagement and Innovation Nicola Murphy said the exciting project at Blyth in the state's Mid North is among eight new partnerships forged this year across metropolitan and regional areas.

"Using just a small percentage of water compared to a standard outdoor garden, Blyth Primary's new aquaponics system will provide a significant tool to educate young students about biodiversity and efficient water use in a hands-on way," Nicola said.

"Sharing our vision for sustainability, the system will also harness clean, green solar energy to power its operations and reduce reliance on electricity from the grid, helping to reduce greenhouse gas emissions."

"We look forward to working with students and teachers at Blyth Primary to get this innovative system up and running over the coming year."

SA Water's 2022-23 Community Partnerships Program is assisting groups and events of different shapes and sizes achieve positive outcomes for their local communities, ranging from an urban wetland in the South East to a new sensory garden in Port Pirie.

"We're also partnering-up to deliver an incredible feature garden at this year's Royal Adelaide Show, where tens of thousands of visitors each day can learn about creating cool, green spaces in their community," Nicola said.

"We know grassroots groups and events have faced challenges throughout recent years due to COVID-19, and we can't wait to work together with all of this year's program recipients to achieve great outcomes.”
