SA Water has finished the installation of its nest box network across four reservoir reserves, with 60 new boxes providing secure shelters for various bird species and small mammals.
SA Water’s Manager of Land Catchments and Recreation Dr Brooke Swaffer said the nest box program, which began in the middle of 2023, focuses on enhancing biodiversity and has already begun to show encouraging signs of success.
“At Myponga Reservoir Reserve on the Fleurieu Peninsula, we’re hoping to attract possums, owls and parrots, with a variety of species, such as Crimson Rosella chicks, Brushtail Possums and Ringtail Possums, already discovered living in the nest boxes,” Brooke said.
“There’s also been interest from galahs and rainbow lorikeets, demonstrating the nest boxes are attracting a diverse range of native birdlife.
“Over at Hope Valley in Adelaide’s north-east, we’re hoping to see kookaburras, possums and parrots, and have already spotted Crimson Rosella eggs.
“The nest boxes at Middle River on Kangaroo Island and Happy Valley in the southern suburbs are set to be monitored in the coming months, with Middle River focusing on owls and Happy Valley on kookaburras, ducks and parrots.
“Traditionally, natural tree hollows serve as vital shelters for birds and animals, providing protection from the weather and predators, as well as safe spaces for roosting and breeding. However, as tree hollows take many years to form, the installation of these nest boxes offers an immediate solution to habitat loss.”
The 60 wooden nest boxes were supplied by FauNature, a specialist in wildlife habitats, who have played a crucial role in the project's success.
“Working closely with our Reservoir Rangers and Volunteers, FauNature led the installation process at most of the reserves, with the boxes placed at varying heights depending on the species of animal they have been designed for,” Brooke said.
“Additionally, the three owl-specific boxes at Myponga were provided by Conservation Volunteers Australia, also sourced from FauNature.
“We’re incredibly grateful to our reservoir volunteers for their dedication in helping us assemble and paint these boxes, as well as for their ongoing contributions to habitat restoration, wildlife monitoring, community events and fish stocking.”
