Finger Point pipeline rehab works testing

SA Water will be conducting tests on the Finger Point Wastewater Treatment Plant outfall pipe on Thursday, 6 February, to check the efficacy of relining works on the infrastructure.

The testing is the next planned stage of works following the relining of the plant’s 400-millimetre diameter pipe with a PVC liner that was completed in February last year.

The planned testing will involve sending an environmentally safe yellow-coloured dye, known as Fluorescein, through the relined pipe to identify any further cracks or leaks, helping to identify any further works that may be required.

The dye is commonly used in marine environments and creates a temporary cloud of dispersed colour in the water which dissolves quickly.

SA Water Senior Manager of Capital Delivery Peter Seltsikas said teams will survey the area surrounding the outfall pipe using drones and record areas that may need further investigation.

"This is the next stage in testing the efficacy of the relining works on the pipe and will allow us to act quickly on any other works needed on this important piece of infrastructure," Peter said.

“Boat users  and beachgoers should not be concerned if they spot any yellow clouds around the pipe as it is environmentally safe and water-soluble.

“For everyone’s safety during the testing, a small section of Finger Point beach will be closed at times to enable our crews to undertake the testing.

“We will have signage on site advising the local community.”

The Finger Point Wastewater Treatment Plant outfall pipe has operated reliably for more than 50 years and discharges highly cleaned and thoroughly treated wastewater 100 metres from the beach into the ocean.
