Drinking fountains kicking environmental goals at Adelaide Oval

SA Water drinking fountains at Adelaide Oval have helped save more than a quarter of a million single-use plastic bottles from ending up in landfill over the past five years.

Six fountains are installed around the oval precinct and since 2019, have refilled the equivalent of 251,973 bottles – or 151,184 litres of water.

As well as providing a cost saving for Adelaide Oval patrons with easy access to safe, clean drinking water at some of the state’s premier sporting events, the fountains have saved more than 24,000 kilograms of CO2 emissions in the production of plastic bottles.

SA Water’s Brand and Community Connection Manager Kellie McDonald said the refill stations are better for your health and hip pocket.

“By providing convenient places to refill reusable and sustainable water bottles, we’re empowering communities to create an enduring impact on the environment,” Kellie said.

“About 370 million single-use plastic water bottles end up in landfill each year in Australia, so our drinking fountains provide clear environmental benefits.”

The Northern Mound fountain near the famed Oval scoreboard proved the most popular, delivering 44,945 litres and saving more than 74,900 single-use 600 millilitre plastic bottles from landfill.

The Western Breezeway (43,457 litres) and East Gate entry (23,923 litres) rounded out the top three busiest fountains at the oval, saving a combined 112,300 bottles from potential landfill.

Football and cricket fans are encouraged to bring a reusable bottle and refill it for free at SA Water’s Australian-designed and manufactured drinking fountains that have a low-lying arm bubbler on the side, ensuring they are child and wheelchair accessible.

The fountains at Adelaide Oval are located on the Eastern Plaza, at the Victor Richardson Gates on the southern side, in the Western stand near the Sheffield Child room, on the Northern Deck, on the Southern Plaza and the Village Green South.
