Drinking fountain at Monarto encourages visitors to go plastic free

Choosing tap over bottled water has been made easier for visitors to Monarto Safari Park in the Adelaide Hills, with the installation of a new SA Water drinking fountain, bringing the total number of fountains across the park to six.

The newest fountain located at the Black Rhino bus stop, adjacent to the current Asian elephant habitat offers a sustainable alternative to bottled water, helping people to save money and reduce plastic waste.

SA Water's Manager of Brand and Community Connection Kellie McDonald said it's committed to promoting sustainable actions and encourages substituting single-use items for reusable options wherever possible.

“During the warm summer days, it’s vital everyone has a reliable source of safe, clean water to stay hydrated, especially while outdoors,” Kellie said.

“Throughout the school holidays, more people visit Monarto, especially with new resident Burma the elephant, and just as elephants rely on their trunks to drink water, people can rely on reusable drink bottles.

“Animals, including those at Monarto Safari Park, benefit from efforts to reduce plastic pollution, which can harm ecosystems and wildlife.

“With around 370 million single-use plastic water bottles making their way to landfill each year in Australia, where they take up to 1,000 years to break down, public drinking fountains can help stem the tide of plastics.

“Choosing tap water over bottled water is a small but significant step in ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for all creatures.”

Designed and manufactured in Australia, the drinking fountain at Monarto can accommodate people's different needs, with a water spout that is child and wheelchair accessible.

The fountain also features a ‘water window’ to allow for easy, safe filling of water bottles and a splash guard to limit direct mouth contact with the nozzle.

SA Water has drinking fountains located all around South Australia and you can search for one closest to you by downloading SA Water's BYOB app from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
