Delivering water security to Moonta residents

SA Water has begun construction works on the installation of around 1400 metres of a new water main relay in Moonta to prepare for future growth in the area.

The existing pipeline is being increased from 150mm in diameter to 250mm and will support maintaining water service levels for the anticipated increase in network demand.

The new pipe, which is being laid beneath Milne Terrace, is among 47,000 metres of water mains going into the ground as part of SA Water’s four-year, $155 million water main management program.

SA Water’s General Manager of Sustainable Infrastructure Amanda Lewry said the new pipe is made from PVC, which is known for having better flexibility and being more resistant to soil movement compared to fibro-cement.

“These works are part of an on-going drive to ensure South Australian communities, like here in Moonta, have access to reliable water services,” Amanda said.

“The water main on Milne Terrace was installed in the 1960s and is nearing the end of its service life, the water main upgrade will secure Moonta’s future water supply.

“As regional communities see population growth, demand for services, including water and wastewater, are increasing.

“SA Water is committed to planning for future growth and ensuring we can continue to provide reliable services to regional customers.

“Water mains have a lifespan of up to 100 years and these new pipes will ensure a secure supply of clean, safe drinking water to local customers well into the future.”

Construction is expected to be completed in early 2023, with works typically occurring Monday to Friday between 7am and 5pm.

“For the safety of our people and the local community, we ask residents and road users to please take note of localised traffic management in place while the works are underway,” Amanda said.

“We will also ensure our customers are notified of any temporary water supply interruptions that are necessary when we move their connections over from the old to new pipes.

“We look forward to continuing to work together with our construction partners to deliver investment in our communities right across the state.”
