1,500 and counting for Village Green bubbler

Wetting the whistle of locals, the Two Wells Village Green’s new drinking fountain has already served up more than 1,500 litres of water – helping avoid around 2,500 single-use plastic bottles going to landfill.

Installed in October last year as part of SA Water’s initiative to make tap water more accessible in the community, the fountain has been used for a quick drink or refill nearly 3,800 times and is supplied by the utility’s local water network.

Adelaide Plains Council Mayor Mark Wasley said the community and visitors to the town are embracing the Village Green and its new drinking fountain, which is inspiring sustainable behaviour.

“The new Village Green is quickly becoming the heart of our town, and we’re thrilled to augment the space by providing a free, environmentally friendly alternative to single-use bottled water,” Mark said.

“We’ve significantly overhauled the town’s main centre into a vibrant, green precinct and our new drinking fountain is one of the centrepieces which demonstrates the space’s emphasis on sustainability. The fountain’s refillable water bowl for dogs to drink from is also proving quite popular.

“It’s become a real destination for residents and visitors, and their ability to easily access a free source of water is helping reduce our environmental footprint and the impact of plastic on our planet.”

Designed and manufactured in Australia, a low-lying drinking arm bubbler on the side ensures each fountain is child and wheelchair accessible, and an in-ground dog drinking bowl keeps thirsty pooches satisfied.

The fountain’s contemporary hygiene features, such as its ‘water window’, allow for easy, safe filling of water bottles and a splash guard limits direct mouth contact with the bubbler nozzle.

SA Water’s Senior Manager of Media, Communications and Stakeholder Engagement Joshua Zugajev said the utility’s growing network of drinking fountains is making it easier for the community to build a healthy habit.

“In addition to Two Wells, we’ve also recently installed drinking fountains at the Crystal Brook Showgrounds, Railway Terrace in Bute and Ralli Park in Balaklava, expanding our network throughout the Adelaide Plains and Mid North,” Joshua said.

“Having more places to grab a drink or quickly refill makes it easier for people to pack a reusable water bottle and access tap water while they’re out and about, empowering our communities to create a positive impact on the environment.

“We’ll continue working together with local councils across South Australia to identify opportunities to amplify our fleet of drinking fountains and lead the way in reducing waste.”
