Water tank rolling into Beetaloo Valley

Construction has started on SA Water’s new 400,000 litre water storage tank at Beetaloo Valley in South Australia’s Mid North, which will help improve drinking water security for around 50 local residents and deliver water to smaller tanks in the area.

The new tank will measure around 3.6 meters high, 12 meters in diameter and is being built within the Department for Environment and Water-managed Beetaloo Reservoir Reserve, adjacent existing water treatment operations managed by SA Water.

SA Water’s Senior Manager of Capital Delivery Peter Seltsikas said this investment in maintaining essential water infrastructure reflects the utility’s commitment to providing reliable water services to its regional customers.

“As regional communities see population growth, the demand for water services is increasing and we’re planning and preparing for the future to ensure we can continue to provide clean, safe water to customers across South Australia,” Peter said.

“The Beetaloo Valley tank will provide additional storage capacity, improving our ability to supply water during peak demand periods and provide a buffer during times of drought or potential supply disruptions.

“A cover will be installed over the tank, sealing its interior and protecting the quality of drinking water once the tank is filled and operating, to ensure the safety of treated water within the network it supplies.”

Construction of the tank – which will be located close to Beetaloo Valley Road near the reservoir reserve entrance gate – is expected to be complete by the end of 2023, subject to weather and any technical constraint, with works typically occurring from Monday to Friday between 9am and 6pm.

“These works are part of an ongoing drive to ensure South Australian communities, like here in Beetaloo Valley, continue to have access to reliable water services,” Peter said.

“We are committed to minimising any construction impacts during the project, such as dust or noise caused by the use of heavy machinery and increased vehicle movement in and out of our worksite and equipment laydown area.

“While our crews are on site, there may also be changes to local traffic conditions, with these measures in place to protect the safety of our people and commuters.”

Construction of the new Beetaloo Valley tank is part of SA Water’s four-year, $80 million investment involving the renewal of 49 water tanks, as well as safe access upgrades and new tank constructions across South Australia.”
