New fountain makes a splash for Port Augusta residents

Choosing tap over bottled water has been made easier for the Port Augusta community, with the installation of a new drinking fountain.

Located at ETSA Oval, the fountain offers a convenient and free way to refill your reusable bottle and is also fitted with a dog bowl to quench your pet’s thirst.

SA Water's General Manager of Strategy, Engagement and Innovation Nicola Murphy said the drinking station provides a sustainable alternative to bottled water, saving money and reducing plastic waste.

“As we approach summer and the weather warms up, it’s important Port Augusta locals have a reliable source of safe, clean water to stay hydrated while out in the sun,” said Nicola.

“With around 370 million single-use plastic water bottles making their way to landfill each year in Australia, where they take up to 1,000 years to break down, public drinking fountains can help stem the tide of plastics.

“It's important we promote sustainable actions and substitute single-use items for reusable choices wherever possible.

“By providing a simple alternative to bottled water, we hope to see more people choosing to refill at their local drinking fountain, resulting in less plastic waste in the community.

“We encourage everyone to keep a reusable bottle handy when you're out and about and to top up on tap water instead of buying it.

"If you’re in Port Augusta and are going for a run around the oval or playing a game of footy with mates, you'll be able to easily access water when you need it."

Designed and manufactured in Australia, the drinking fountains can accommodate people's different needs, with a waterspout that is child and wheelchair accessible.

The fountains' features also include a ‘water window’ to allow for easy, safe filling of water bottles and a splash guard to limit direct mouth contact with the nozzle.

SA Water has drinking fountains located all around South Australia, with plans to install more in coming months.
