Eleven new reservoir rangers are now hitting the trails of South Australia’s reservoir reserves, as part of a recent recruitment drive by SA Water to support the ever-growing popularity of these green open spaces.
Donning the familiar navy blue, the seasonal rangers have been brought on board for peak visitation periods during the warmer months and are working across a range of sites, such as Myponga on the Fleurieu Peninsula, South Para in the Southern Barossa, and Happy Valley within suburban Adelaide.
Joining an existing team of 20, the new rangers are helping drive conservation and land management activities at the state’s reservoir reserves, as well as supporting volunteering opportunities and overall visitor experience.
SA Water’s Senior Manager of Wastewater Expertise and Environment James Crocker said the group bring with them a diversity of knowledge and enthused passion for people and the environment.
“We’re thrilled to be working with our new rangers, who are a vibrant bunch that will help champion the sustained preservation of our reservoir reserves,” James said.
“One of their key roles is interacting with people and helping them enjoy their visit at these beautiful places, offering a friendly face if you’re after advice on exploring the site, or an inside word on good spots to check out.
“They’ll also help deliver a number of conservation initiatives by harnessing their shared backgrounds in land management and environmental science, complementing the capabilities of our existing rangers.
“Excitingly, this will facilitate knowledge sharing with our new recruits learning from the experience of our existing rangers, while also bringing fresh ideas on improving the environmental and recreational potential of each site.
“Many of our new rangers recently completed, or are still undertaking, their tertiary studies, with these positions enabling people to break into the workforce and, for some, gain invaluable experience at the same time they’re studying, which will amplify their future employment prospects.
“As well as on the job learning, they’ll also be provided training by our experts across the business in areas such as water quality sampling and weed management, to build on their theoretical understanding with practical, hands-on experience.
“We hope to see many of them continue their careers with us as opportunities arise across our team.”
