Strathalbyn water main works complete

Work to replace and relocate around 500 metres of water main along Sandergrove Road in Strathalbyn is complete, with all local residents now receiving water through the new pipe.

Excavated areas of road have also been refilled, with final road surface reinstatement planned for next week, including at several intersections along the suburban strip.

SA Water’s Senior Manager Media Relations Joshua Zugajev said the purpose of the works was to ensure a continued reliable supply of drinking water for local customers and address safety issues created by earlier streetscape works.

"Regular sharing of information with the Alexandrina Council and updates to the local community during our works over the past few months has helped reduce construction impacts, including in the lead-up to any required temporary disruptions to mains-supplied water," Joshua said.

"Our crews were also able to lay a temporary bitumen seal over each section of installed pipe, allowing traffic to safely drive over while the remaining works continued."

The third-party streetscape works resulted in the water main being covered by footpaths, kerbing and electrical poles. A new 250-millimetre diameter main has been installed below the road, to enable access for any necessary repairs and achieve minimum safe clearance distances between the pipe and other infrastructure.

SA Water contractor Fleurieu Civil began work on Sandergrove Road in late January, and since this time has dug beneath the road to lay new pipe, transferred property water service connections to the new main, carried out pressure testing and water quality checks and completed concrete reinstatement.

"For the final stage of the project, the entire lane width of excavated sections of road will be resurfaced next Wednesday and Thursday, between 7am and 6pm, and this will help minimise any visual impact," Joshua said.

"The road will remain open during this time, with contraflow in place. For the safety of our people and commuters, we ask road users to please take note of localised traffic management while we’re on site."

An additional 265 metres of water main was also recently installed along the southern part of Sandergrove Road, as part of a separate project to ensure the local network can meet an expected increase in demand.
