Water produced from the Murray Bridge Water Treatment Plant has taken out the coveted number one spot in South Australia's Best Tasting Tap Water competition.
The annual contest, organised by the Water Industry Operators Association of Australia, was held virtually earlier today with the judging panel assessing the samples on their clarity, mouthfeel and taste from 16 South Australian water treatment plants.
SA Water’s Senior Manager of Water Expertise Daniel Hoefel said it was pleasing to see the Murray Bridge plant producing such a great tasting result, however it had close competition from other Riverland operators.
“This year we had many high-quality tap water samples in the field, with the three finalists, Loxton, Renmark and Murray Bridge, showcasing the best water in the state," said Daniel.
“Sourced from the River Murray and using traditional filtration process, the Murray Bridge plant provides water to around 19,000 customers, producing 3,100 megalitres of water each year.
“The team at the Murray Bridge plant, operated by TRILITY, work incredibly hard and strive for excellence when it comes to delivering clean, safe, and great tasting tap water to the community.
“This competition is a fantastic opportunity to showcase our fantastic drinking water and to recognise the efforts of operators providing our state with valuable water services."
Today’s competition also saw entries from treatment plants right across the state, such as Penneshaw, Happy Valley and Mount Pleasant.
Murray Bridge will be representing South Australia against other Australian states when it competes in the national competition held in Casino, New South Wales later this year.
The winner of the national competition will then go on to represent Australia at the annual Berkeley Springs International Water Tasting Competition held in West Virginia, USA.
WIOA Managing Director George Wall said the high standard of water delivered by these water suppliers made the judges’ task of selecting a winner a challenge, albeit a welcome one.
“Congratulations to the operators at Murray Bridge, who have been doing a fantastic job treating the water from the Murray River to a standard that has been judged best in the state. This is a great outcome considering the Murray has been in flood for an extended period of time," said George.
