Port Hughes primed for water main upgrade

SA Water will soon begin works to replace more than 400 metres of water main along Dowling Drive in Port Hughes, as part of efforts to continually improve services for its customers.

The replacement forms part of SA Water’s four-year, $155 million water main management program, continuing the utility’s commitment to deliver trusted water services for a sustainable and healthy South Australia.

SA Water’s General Manager of Sustainable Infrastructure Amanda Lewry said the Port Hughes water main upgrade is a great example of ongoing investment in the regions to ensure a reliable supply of safe, clean water for customers.

“We are using PVC pipes for the majority of our water main replacement program, which are known for their better flexibility and resistance to movement, compared to fibro-cement,” Amanda said.

“While it’s difficult to completely stop water main leaks and breaks from occurring due to soil movement, weather and a variety of other environmental factors, we are committed to proactively limiting their frequency and any potential impact on our customers.

“With the new pipes having an approximate life span of up to 100 years, this project ensures we can keep providing our customers in Port Hughes with safe, smart, reliable and affordable water services for years to come.”

Construction on Dowling Drive will begin in mid-July and is expected to take around six weeks to complete, with works typically occurring from Monday to Friday between 7.30am and 5pm.

“For the safety of our people and the local community, we ask residents and road users to please take note of localised traffic management in place while the works are underway,” Amanda said.

“We will also ensure residents and businesses are notified of any temporary water supply interruptions that are necessary when we move their connections over from the old to new pipes.”
