The community is invited to foster a connection with the great outdoors through Nature Play SA's culture, art and nature workshops, thanks to support provided through SA Water’s 2023-24 Reservoirs Partnership Program.
The annual program supports grassroots events and projects held at South Australia’s reservoir reserves, with up to $10,000 available for each recipient.
The Nature Play SA initiative, aimed at fostering a stronger connection to Aboriginal culture and nature, will take place at Myponga, Happy Valley, Mount Bold and Hope Valley reservoir reserves.
Nature Play SA CEO Jason Tyndall said the four sessions are designed to immerse participants in experiences underpinned by nature connection, mindfulness and storytelling.
“Each session will commence with a nature and culture walk led by knowledgeable guides who will explain the unique plants and animals surrounding the reservoirs,” Jason said.
“Following the walk, participants will engage in an art session, combining creativity with the natural surroundings.
“These sessions will be co-facilitated by a Kaurna Traditional Owner, supporting reconciliation and fostering a deeper understanding of culture, history and place.”
SA Water’s Senior Manager of Environment and Energy James Crocker said the project seeks to promote physical activity through the scenic walking trails that wind through each of the reservoir reserves.
“Participants will gain knowledge about the value of the reserves as well as experience improved wellbeing as a result of increased physical activity and connection to nature,” James said.
“Our Reservoirs Partnership Program supports projects to deliver a range of initiatives that enhance visitor experience and encourage active, thriving communities by connecting people with our reservoir reserves.
“Monitoring the breeding activity of Murray Cod, empowering women through kayaking workshops and a ‘Walk on Water’ event are among the other successful recipients we’re working with this year.”
