Myponga laced up to debut new running event

A new running event is set to hit the Fleurieu Peninsula this month, with the trails of Myponga Reservoir Reserve welcoming fitness fanatics from all over South Australia for a headline 19-kilometre foot race.

Aptly named the Myponga Loop, the event joins a series of races across the region hosted by Great Southern Runs this year, and will circumnavigate the entire reservoir reserve – including a section along the dam wall.

Great Southern Runs Owner and Race Director Matt Evans said more than 550 runners have already signed up to participate in this weekend’s highly-anticipated event at Myponga.

“We’re thrilled to provide the community with another premier running event located in one of the state’s most spectacular green open spaces,” Matt said.

“It will be our first race hosted at a reservoir reserve, giving runners a unique course that showcases Myponga’s scenic natural setting with panoramic water views and undulating trails through a vast pine forest.

“The 19-kilometre loop features nearly 300 metres of elevation change to put participants to the test, which will all be worth it as they take in the beauty of the site.

“Our runs are designed for everyone – whether you’re a beginner or an established athlete – and this weekend’s event will also feature a shorter seven-kilometre race around the southern shores, along with a free kids ‘dash’.

“We’re grateful for SA Water’s support, who provided guidance on the nuances of the trail network and how to ensure participant safety, which has resulted in all road sections of the race managed by traffic controllers and friendly marshals stationed along the course to keep everyone on the right track.”

SA Water’s Senior Manager of Wastewater Expertise and Research James Crocker said the number of events hosted by South Australia’s reservoir reserves continued to grow.

“It’s wonderful to see our communities tapping into the recreational activities available at our reservoir reserves to host a variety of events that connect people to nature and promote the health outcomes of spending time outdoors,” James said.

“Myponga’s latest running event builds on the weekly five-kilometre parkrun – a global exercise movement – which is coming up to its first anniversary and sees around 50 people participating every Saturday morning.

“What’s even more pleasing, is the genuine effort by community groups to balance their events with the ongoing preservation of these beautiful spaces as drinking water sources and native habitat for wildlife.”

The Myponga Loop race events start from 8am on Sunday 12 March at Hansen Street in Myponga, and anyone interested can visit mypongaloop.com.au for more information or to register.
