Major milestone for Ceduna’s new water tank

SA Water has achieved a major construction milestone in its $37 million Ceduna water storage project, with 36 pre-cast concrete panels now installed and forming a water-tight structure for the town’s new 4.5 million litre storage tank.

Work is now underway to install a roof on the tank, as crews progress installing a connecting 12-kilometre pipeline, which is being delivered together with SA Water’s major framework partner McConnell Dowell Diona joint venture.

This new infrastructure will support ongoing drinking water security and quality for more than 1,800 homes and businesses in the West Coast town and surrounding communities.

Located on Kalanbi Road, the new tank is being constructed next to SA Water’s existing water storage, forming a critical part of the broader supply network for the region.

SA Water’s General Manager of Sustainable Infrastructure Peter Seltsikas said the completion of the tank wall panels marks a significant step forward for the project.

“These 36 pre-cast panels, which form the circular outer wall of the tank, have been stitched together to form a water-tight external structure, demonstrating a major achievement that brings us closer to delivering a more secure and reliable water supply for Ceduna,” Peter said.

“This tank will increase our capacity to store treated drinking water in the town, helping us better manage supply during high-demand periods, especially during warmer months or unexpected service interruptions.”

Once complete, the tank will connect to Ceduna’s existing water network via a new underground pipeline, which will be laid through a combination of road reserves and private land.

“Ceduna’s water is sourced from the River Murray and transported via the 640-kilometre-long Morgan to Whyalla Pipeline, before making its way to our local infrastructure,” Peter said.

“The new storage tank adds resilience to this system and enhances our ability to meet current and future demands for our customers.”

Construction of the tank and pipeline is expected to be completed by November 2025, subject to weather and any technical constraints, with the tank to be operational in early 2026, following a standard testing and commissioning phase.

Construction crews will be onsite seven days a week from September, as works ramp on the project.
