Empowering reconciliation through Pirku-Itya partnerships

Not for profit organisations with a project or event that supports reconciliation outcomes are invited to apply for SA Water’s 2024-25 Pirku-Itya (Reconciliation Partnerships Program).

Pirku-Itya, a Kaurna word meaning ‘for community’, is an annual program providing up to $10,000 funding to grassroots community groups that contribute to reconciliation across South Australia.

SA Water’s Manager of Brand and Community Connection Kellie McDonald said the utility is looking to partner with local groups that promote stronger communities through reconciliation-based activities.

“Since 2020, we have worked together with 22 organisations across regional and metropolitan areas through Pirku-Itya,” Kellie said.

“These collaborations have created impactful outcomes, such as establishing a bush garden at Flinders View Primary School in Port Augusta and using film to advance cultural learning in the Coorong region in partnership with Adelaide Contemporary Experimental.

“As we enter the fourth year of the program, we’re excited to continue our support for organisations committed to creating positive change within their communities.

“We’re looking for groups who are working towards positive reconciliation goals while also promoting the health and wellbeing of active, thriving communities through a cooler or greener environment, or are showcasing proactive environmental leadership.

“Pirku-Itya is one of the ways we aim to make positive and meaningful progress in our journey towards reconciliation and cultural awareness.

“We recognise the important role that communities play in encouraging reconciliation within communities as well as caring for land and water, and we want ’to work collaboratively with these groups to achieve our shared vision of a sustainable future.

“We encourage any group with a project or event that meets our criteria to apply for this year's program.”
