Residents and businesses in Yunta, Terowie and Manna Hill can now enjoy a new, safe and clean supply of drinking water from their taps, following the completion of upgrades to SA Water's supply network in the mid and upper north area.
Historically, each town’s water supply has been designated as non-drinking, with local SA Water customers required to safely boil their tap supply before drinking, preparing food or brushing their teeth.
The landmark project, which delivered a combination of new elevated water storage tanks, water main network upgrades and additional water disinfection stations, brings each town’s drinking water supply into line with the health and safety requirements within theAustralian Drinking Water Guidelines.
SA Water’s General Manager of Sustainable Infrastructure Peter Seltsikas said this is a milestone for local customers.
“For people in Yunta, Terowie and Manna Hill to now be able to top up a glass or brush their teeth using drinking-quality water straight from the tap is something we know will make a positive difference to their everyday lives,” Peter said.
“With water treated at the Riverland’s Morgan Water Treatment Plant, delivered via the Morgan to Whyalla pipeline to nearby Peterborough and then tankered to each of the three towns, these vital infrastructure upgrades enable us to maintain the water supply’s safety as it moves through the pipe network and to our customer’s taps.
“The project involved the installation of a new 114,000 litre capacity water storage tank in both Yunta and Manna Hill town, with an additional three chlorine dosing stations strategically installed across the existing local pipe network to preserve water quality, and ensure the water’s compliance with the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.
“We also tailored our work at each of the three locations to provide broader benefits to the community, such as improving driveway access into nearby vehicle rest stops along the iconic Barrier Highway and retaining the decommissioned water tower in Yunta as an important community landmark in the town.
“We know that safe and clean drinking water is vital to maintaining health and hydration as well as delivering positive economic and social benefits, and we’re excited to see our local customers enjoying their new drinking water!”
