SA Water will hold community marine science forums in early May at its dedicated information centre in Port Lincoln, to share up-to-date scientific information on the proposed desalination plant at Billy Lights Point.
Along with representatives from SA Water, presenters at the forums include Executive Director Industry and Regional Development from the South Australian Research and Development Institute (SARDI) Peter Appleford, and Dr Don Plowman, independent Chair of the Marine Science Review Panel.
SA Water’s General Manager Sustainable Infrastructure Amanda Lewry said since opening its information centre earlier this month, they have been buoyed by the community interest in this project.
“What is clear from our conversations with community members to date, is that there is strong interest in the marine science specifically, and how the desalination plant will work in conjunction with the aquaculture industry, which is synonymous with the Eyre Peninsula,” Amanda said.
“Significant scientific modelling was undertaken over several years before Billy Lights Point was selected as our preferred location for the plant, and next month’s forums are an opportunity to hear from the experts and ask questions about this modelling and how the science helped us make an informed decision.
“Engagement with the community is a vital part of our process, and these forums are part of several activities that are already underway, including information sessions across the region during April and May.
“We are committed to having ongoing conversations with the local community and stand ready to hold more of these science-focused forums, should the community seek more information.
“To strengthen this collaborative approach, we are also establishing a new Eyre Peninsula Desalination Project Reference Group, made up of community representatives.
“The purpose of the group will be to discuss opportunities and issues relevant to the project to help inform the development submission, design and the construction phase of the plant, with the first meeting scheduled within the next week.”
The marine science forums will be held Tuesday 2 May at 10am, 3pm and 7pm and will be free to attend, however registrations are essential, as places are limited.
