The Blue Lake’s new drinking water fountain has already reached an impressive milestone, supplying more than 10,000 quick sips and refills for locals and visitors to the popular tourist attraction.
Installed in August last year as part of SA Water’s initiative to make tap water more accessible in the community, the fountain has since delivered around 4,300 litres of safe, clean drinking water – supplied by the utility’s local distribution network.
SA Water’s Senior Manager of Media, Communications and Stakeholder Engagement Joshua Zugajev said locals and tourists are embracing the Blue Lake’s new drinking fountain.
“We’re thrilled to partner with the City of Mount Gambier and help augment visitor experience at one of the region’s most iconic tourist destinations by providing a free, environmentally friendly alternative to single-use bottled water,” Joshua said.
“The Blue Lake’s drinking water fountain is conveniently located at the main lookout on the western side of the lake for visitors to easily access, and locals enjoying a walk or run around the circuit trail can stop by for a quick drink or refill their water bottle.
“Since water began flowing, the fountain’s already helped avoid more than 7,000 single-use plastic bottles ending up in landfill.”
Designed and manufactured in Australia, a low-lying drinking arm bubbler on the side ensures each fountain is child and wheelchair accessible, and an in-ground dog drinking bowl keeps thirsty pooches satisfied.
The fountain’s contemporary hygiene features, such as its ‘water window’, allow for easy, safe filling of water bottles, and a splash guard limits direct mouth contact with the bubbler nozzle.
Mr Zugajev said the utility’s growing network of drinking fountains is making it easier for the community to build a healthy habit.
“In addition to the Blue Lake, we’ve also recently installed drinking fountains at the Millicent playground and skate park, as well as the Port MacDonnell foreshore, expanding our suite in the South East,” Joshua said.
“Having more places to grab a drink or quickly refill makes it easier for people to pack a reusable water bottle and access tap water while they’re out and about, empowering our communities to create an enduring impact on the environment.
“We’ll continue working together with local councils across South Australia to identify opportunities to amplify our fleet of drinking fountains and lead the way in reducing waste.”
