Water main refresh on the way for Wilmington

More than 2400 metres of water mains in Wilmington are set to be replaced over the coming weeks as part of efforts by SA Water to continually improve services for local customers.

The works, which will install new pipes on sections of Horrocks Highway, Sherman Street, Bassington Terrace, Alexis Road, Duhring Road and Gillett Road, are part of a $137 million investment by SA Water to replace around 375,000 meters of water mains across the state between 2016 and 2020.  

SA Water’s General Manager of Asset Operations and Delivery Mark Gobbie said the large replacement will install new PVC pipes, which are flexible and more resistant to movement than cast iron and fibro-cement pipes.

“While soil movement, weather and various other environmental factors make it tough to prevent leaks and breaks from occurring, we are committed to taking a proactive approach in limiting their frequency and any impact on our customers,” Mark said.

“Water mains traditionally have a lifespan of around 100 years, which ensures this replacement will allow us to keep providing world class water services to our customers well into the future.

“This is one of many water main replacements SA Water is undertaking this year, and we look forward to continuing our investment in communities right across the state.”

The upgrade works are expected to take around five weeks to complete depending on weather conditions, with works typically occurring between Monday to Friday from 7:00am to 5:00pm.  

“For safety reasons, we ask local residents and commuters to please take note of the changed traffic conditions in place while the works are being completed,” Mark said.

“We will also notify local residents in Wilmington of any temporary water supply interruptions when we move their connections over from the old to new pipes.”
