Waikerie water mains ready for a refresh

Around 570 metres of water mains in Waikerie are set to be replaced over the coming weeks as part of efforts by SA Water to continually improve services for local customers.

The works, which will install new water main pipes in laneways between Jemison Street and Heming Street, Heming Street and Andrew Street and Burns Street and Cates Street, are part of SA Water’s $137 million investment to replace around 375,000 meters of water mains across the state between 2016 and 2020.

Eyed off as a priority project, SA Water’s General Manager of Asset Operations and Delivery Mark Gobbie said the replacement will install new PVC pipes, which are flexible and more resistant to movement than cast iron and fibro-cement pipes.

“Although the weather, soil movement and other environmental factors make it tough to prevent leaks and breaks from occurring, we are committed to a proactive approach in limiting their frequency and any impact on our customers,” Mark said.

“Water mains traditionally have a lifespan of around 100 years, which ensures the work being done will allow us to continue providing world class water services to our customers well into the future.

“This is one of many water main replacements SA Water is undertaking this year, and we look forward to continuing our investment in communities right across the state.”

The upgrade works are expected to take around five weeks to complete, with works typically occurring between Monday to Saturday from 7am to 5:30pm.  

“For the purposes of safety, we ask residents and commuters in Waikerie to please be aware of the changed traffic conditions in place while the works are being completed,” Mark said.

“We will also notify local residents of any temporary water supply interruptions when we move their connections over from the old to new pipes.”
