The A-Z of slippery science free for the whole family

Do you know what pelagic means?

Little scientists are invited to attend a free performance of SA Water’s The Alphabet of Awesome Science: Water! to learn the meaning of pelagic and 25 other water-infused words, from professors Lexi Con and Noel Edge of That Science Gang.

As part of National Science Week, the show will surf through 26 splishy splashy experiments – including liquid nitrogen clouds and hydrogen-induced fireballs – across four shows at Star Theatres on Saturday 10 August and Sunday 11 August.

David Lampard stars as Noel Edge and said the show, which won an award for Best Children’s Event at the 2019 Adelaide Fringe, would spark kids’ scientific curiosity.

“It’s an engaging form of education that uses live action and humour to encourage interest from young people in science as an area of study, promoting science-based career pathways and STEM subjects,” David said.

“We’ve worked together with SA Water for more than 10 years and we’re thrilled to bring educational science theatre to a family audience that shines a light on the spectacular words of water.

“Over the past few months, we’ve distilled a series of water-soaked science demonstrations that are sure to inspire young people and prompt wide-ranging science discussions.

“From algid to zoetic, the show is overflowing with sesquipedalian words and spectacular science as the pair work through every letter of the alphabet, with each one representing a fascinating new water word.”

The audience selects the order of the letters at the beginning of the show, with Lexi and Noel racing against the clock to make it through all 26 experiments in 52 minutes.

National Science Week is Australia’s annual celebration of science and technology, providing an opportunity to acknowledge the contributions of Australian scientists to the world of knowledge and encouraging younger people to become fascinated by the world they live in.
