Robertstown ready for water main refurb

SA Water will shortly commence works to replace around 700 metres of water main in Robertstown as part of efforts to improve water services for local customers.

Replacing pipes along a section of Church Street near Commercial Street, the project is part of SA Water’s $137 million investment to refurbish around 375,000 meters of water mains across South Australia between 2016 and 2020.

SA Water’s General Manager of Asset Operations and Delivery Mark Gobbie said the new main will be made of PVC, which is more flexible and resistant to underground movement compared to cast iron and fibro-cement pipes.

“While we can’t completely prevent leaks from occurring in our pipes due to certain environmental factors, soil movement and weather conditions, our team is committed to reducing their frequency and impact on customers through main replacements like this,” Mark said.

“With the normal lifespan of new pipes reaching up to 100 years, this main replacement ensures our customers in Robertstown can continue to receive world class water services for years to come.

“This is one of a number of main refurbishments we’re undertaking across regional and metropolitan South Australia this year, and we look forward to continue working with communities across the state to improve water services for our customers.”

The pipe replacement is expected to take around five weeks to complete with works typically occurring between Monday to Friday from 7:30am to 5pm.

“For the safety of our people and residents in the area, we ask commuters to please take note of any localised traffic management put in place while the works are completed,” Mark said.

“We will ensure local residents are notified of any temporary water supply interruptions that are necessary when their connections are moved over from the old to new pipes.”
