Port Lincoln primed for new water main

More than 260 metres of water main along Eltham Avenue in Port Lincoln, between Stevenson Street and Brougham Place, is set to be replaced in the coming weeks as part of on-going efforts by SA Water to reduce the impact of water main breaks on customers.

The works form part of SA Water’s $137 million investment to replace around 375,000 meters of water mains across the state between 2016 and 2020.

SA Water’s General Manager of Asset Operations and Delivery Mark Gobbie said the installation of new PVC pipes, which are flexible and more resistant to movement than cast iron and fibro-cement pipes, has been eyed off as a priority project.

“While environmental factors like soil movement and weather can make it tough to stop leaks and breaks from occurring, we are committed to proactively limiting their frequency and any impact it has on our customers,” Mark said.

“Water mains traditionally have a lifespan of around 100 years, which ensures the work being done will allow us to continue providing world class water services to our customers well into the future.

“This is one of many water main replacements SA Water is undertaking this year, and we look forward to continuing our investment in communities right across the state.”

The upgrade works are expected to take approximately six weeks to complete, with works typically occurring between Monday to Saturday from 7am to 5pm.

“For safety reasons, we ask residents and users of Eltham Avenue to please be aware of changed traffic conditions in the area while the works are being completed,” Mark said.

“We will also notify local residents of any temporary water supply interruptions when we move their connections over from the old to new pipes.”
