Peterborough set for water main upgrade

SA Water has commenced works to replace approximately 850 metres of water main in Peterborough over the coming months, as part of continued efforts to improve water services for customers.

The replacement works, which will take place on Victoria Street (from Chinner Street to Bridges Street), Jervois Street (north of Victoria Street) and Brown Street East (between Jervois Street and High Street), are part of SA Water’s $137 million investment to replace around 375,000 metres of water mains across the state between 2016 and 2020.  

Eyed off as a priority project, SA Water’s General Manager of Asset Operations and Delivery Mark Gobbie said the new PVC pipes are flexible and more resistant to movement than cast iron and fibro-cement pipes.

“As water mains usually have a lifespan of around a century, the main being installed in Peterborough will allow us to continue providing world class water services for customers into the future,” Mark said.

“While environmental factors like soil movement and weather can make it difficult to prevent leaks and breaks from occurring, we are committed to taking a proactive approach in limiting their frequency and any impact on our customers.

“This is one of many water main replacements SA Water is undertaking this year, and we look forward to continuing our investment in communities right across the state.”

The replacement is expected to take up to 10 weeks to complete, with works typically occurring between Monday to Friday from 7am to 5pm.  

“For safety reasons, we ask local residents and road users to please be aware of changed traffic conditions in the area while the works are underway,” Mark said.

“We will also notify local residents of any temporary water supply interruptions when their connections are moved over from the old to new pipes.”
