Peterborough primed for new water main

SA Water has commenced works to upgrade over 900 metres of water mains in Peterborough in the coming months, as part of its continued efforts to reduce the impact of water main breaks on customers.

The works, which will install new pipes along Wright Street (between King and Cyande Streets), George Street and King Street (between Wright Street and Buxton Crescent), and Buxton Crescent are part of a $137 million investment by SA Water to replace around 375,000 meters of water mains between 2016 and 2020.

SA Water’s General Manager of Asset Operations and Delivery Mark Gobbie said the installation of new flexible PVC pipes has been eyed off as a priority project.

"While water main breaks and leaks can be tough to prevent due to factors like soil movement and weather, we are committed to proactively limiting their frequency and customer impact," Mark said.

"Water mains traditionally have a lifespan of around 100 years, which ensures the work we’re doing in the Peterborough area will allow us to continue providing world class water services to our customers well into the future."

Weather permitting, the upgrade is expected to take approximately 13 weeks to complete, with works typically occurring from Monday to Friday between 7am and 5pm.

"For the safety of workers, residents and commuters, we ask everyone to please be aware of changed traffic conditions in the area while the works are being completed," Mark said.

"Our crews will also notify local residents of any temporary water supply interruptions when we move their connections over from the old to new pipes.

"This is one of many water main replacements SA Water is undertaking this year, and we look forward to continuing our investment in communities right across the state."
