New water main popping up for Penneshaw

SA Water has commenced works to replace more than 200 metres of water main along Pelican Street and a section of Warrawee Terrace (between Rapide Drive and Wright Road) in Penneshaw, as part of efforts to reduce the impact of water main breaks on customers.

Taking place over the coming weeks, the works form part of SA Water’s $137 million investment to replace around 375,000 meters of water mains across the state between 2016 and 2020.  

SA Water’s General Manager of Asset Operations and Delivery Mark Gobbie said the replacement works will install new PVC pipes, which are flexible and more resistant to movement than cast iron and fibro-cement pipes.

“The weather, soil movement and other environmental factors can make it tough to prevent leaks and breaks from occurring in water mains, but we are committed to proactively limiting their frequency and impact on customers,” Mark said.

“Water mains traditionally have a lifespan of around 100 years, which ensures the work being done will allow us to continue providing world class water services to our customers well into the future.

“Our work at Penneshaw is just one of many water main replacements SA Water is undertaking in 2019, and we look forward to continuing our investment in communities right across the state.”

The replacement is expected to take around five weeks to complete, with works typically occurring between Monday to Saturday from 7am to 5:30pm.

“For the safety of our crews and the wider public, we ask residents and users of Pelican Street and Warrawee Terrace to please take note of changed traffic conditions in the area while the works are being completed,” Mark said.

“We will also notify local residents of any temporary water supply interruptions when we move their connections over from the old to new pipes.”
