New water main on the way for Port Lincoln

Beginning next week, SA Water will be upgrading 200 metres of water main along Cranston Street in Port Lincoln as part of efforts to continually improve water services for its customers.

The works, between Oxford Terrace and the intersection of Goode Avenue and Tobruk Terrace, are part of a $137 million investment by SA Water to replace around 375,000 metres of water main between 2016 and 2020.

SA Water’s General Manager of Asset Operations and Delivery Mark Gobbie says crews will be installing new PVC pipes, which are known for being more flexible and more resistant to movement compared with cast iron and fibro-cement pipes.

"Although we can’t fully stop leaks and breaks from ever occurring, due to certain environmental factors, we are committed to proactively limiting their frequency and any impact it has on our customers," Mark said.

"Water mains traditionally have a lifespan of around 100 years, which ensures the upgrade done will allow us to continue providing world class water services to our customers well into the future.

"The work in Port Lincoln is one of many water main replacements SA Water is carrying out this year, and we look forward to continuing our investment in communities right across the state."

Weather permitting, the upgrade is expected to take around five weeks to complete, with works typically taking place from Monday to Friday between 7am and 5pm.

"For the safety of workers, residents and commuters, we ask everyone to please be aware of changed traffic conditions in the area while works are being undertaken," Mark said.

"We will also notify local residents of any temporary water supply interruptions, which are required when we move their connections over from the old to new pipes."
