New water main heading to Victor Harbor

Work is underway to replace around 440 metres of water main in Victor Harbor over the coming weeks as part of efforts by SA Water to continually improve services for local customers.

The installation of new water main pipes along a section of Waggon Road near Fuller East Road is part of SA Water’s $137 million investment to replace around 375,000 meters of water mains across the state between 2016 and 2020.

SA Water’s General Manager of Asset Operations and Delivery Mark Gobbie said the replacement will install new PVC pipes, which are flexible and more resistant to movement than cast iron and fibro-cement pipes.

“While environmental factors like soil movement and changing weather conditions can make it tough to stop leaks and breaks from occurring, we remain committed to proactively working to limit their frequency and customer impact,” Mark said.

“Water mains traditionally have a lifespan of around 100 years, which ensures replacing this stretch of water main will allow us to keep providing world class water services to our customers well into the future.

“This is one of many water main replacements SA Water is undertaking this year, and we look forward to continuing our investment in communities right across the state.”

The upgrade works are expected to be completed next month depending on weather conditions, with works typically occurring between Monday to Saturday from 7am to 5:30pm.  

“For the purposes of safety, we ask road users to please be aware of the changed traffic conditions in place while the works are being completed,” Mark said.

“We will also notify local residents of any temporary water supply interruptions when we move their connections over from the old to new pipes.”
