Around 420 metres of water main along Moscow Street in Peterborough, between Railway Terrace and Clair Street, is set to be replaced in the coming months as part of efforts by SA Water to reduce the impact of water main breaks on customers.
Commencing today, the replacement works form part of SA Water’s $137 million investment to replace around 375,000 meters of water mains across the state between 2016 and 2020.
SA Water’s General Manager of Asset Operations and Delivery Mark Gobbie said the works will install new PVC pipes, which are flexible and more resistant to movement than cast iron and fibro-cement pipes.
“While it can be tough to prevent all water main leaks from occurring due to environmental factors like soil movement and weather, our commitment is to take a proactive approach in limiting their frequency and impact on customers,” Mark said.
“Water mains traditionally have a lifespan of around 100 years, which ensures the work being done in Peterborough allows us to continue providing world class water services to our customers well into the future.
“This is one of many water main replacements SA Water is undertaking this year, and we look forward to continuing our investment in communities right across the state.”
The main replacement works are expected to take approximately eight week to complete, with works typically occurring from Monday to Friday between 7am and 5pm.
“To ensure the safety of our work crew and the community, we ask residents and road users to please be aware of changed traffic conditions in the area while the replacement works are being completed,” Mark said.
“We will also notify local residents of any temporary water supply interruptions when we connect the new main to the existing network.”
