New water main for Wilmington on its way

Works are now underway to replace around 2000 metres of water mains under Davenport Road, Beautiful Valley Road and Gunyah Road in Wilmington, as part of continued efforts by SA Water to reduce the impact of water main breaks on customers.

The replacement works form part of SA Water’s $137 million investment to replace around 375,000 meters of water mains across the state between 2016 and 2020.  

Eyed off as a priority project, SA Water’s General Manager of Asset Operations and Delivery Mark Gobbie said the works will install new PVC pipes, which are flexible and more resistant to movement than cast iron and fibro-cement pipes.

“Water mains traditionally have a lifespan of around 100 years, which ensures the work being done will allow us to continue providing world class water services to our customers in the Wilmington area well into the future,” Mark said.

“While soil movement, weather conditions and other environmental factors make it tough to stop leaks and breaks from occurring, we are committed to taking a proactive approach in limiting their frequency and any impact on customers.

“This is among a number of water main replacements SA Water is undertaking across regional South Australia this year, and we look forward to continuing our investment right across the state.”

Expected to take approximately four months to complete, the upgrade works will typically occur from Monday to Thursday from 7am to 5pm.

“For safety purposes, we ask residents and commuters to please be aware of changed traffic conditions that may be in place while the water main replacement works are being completed,” Mark said.

“Local residents will also be notified of any temporary water supply interruptions that may occur when we move their connections over from the old to new pipes.”
