New water main coming for Calomba

Almost 290 metres of water main under Long Plains Road in Calomba, between Daniel Road and Welivere Road, is set to be replaced in the coming weeks as part of SA Water’s ongoing investment to reduce the impact of water main breaks on regional customers.

The works form part of SA Water’s $137 million commitment to renew around 375,000 metres of water mains across South Australia between 2016 and 2020.

SA Water’s General Manager of Asset Operations and Delivery Mark Gobbie said the installation of new PVC pipes, which are flexible and more resistant to movement than cast iron and fibro-cement pipes, has been eyed off as a priority project.

"Water mains traditionally have a lifespan of around 100 years, which ensures the work being done will allow us to continue providing world class water services to our customers well into the future," Mark said.

"While environmental factors like soil movement and weather often make it difficult to stop leaks and breaks from occurring in water mains, we are committed to taking a proactive approach in limiting their frequency and impact on water users.

"This is one of many regional water main replacements SA Water is undertaking this year, and we look forward to continuing our investment in communities right across the state."

The upgrade is expected to take around four weeks to complete, with works typically occurring between 7am and 5pm from Monday to Friday.

"For safety reasons, we ask residents and users of Long Plains Road to please be aware of changed traffic conditions in the area while the works are being completed," Mark said.

"We will also notify local residents of any temporary water supply interruptions when we move their connections over from the old to new pipes."
