New Town set for priority water main refresh

SA Water will shortly commence priority works to replace 680 metres of water main in New Town as part of efforts to improve water services for customers in the area.

The project, which will replace pipes along sections of Thomas Street, Rodda Crescent, George Street and Drain Road, is part of SA Water’s $137 million investment to replace around 375,000 meters of water mains across SA between 2016 and 2020.

SA Water’s Acting Chief Executive Mark Gobbie said the upgrade has been brought forward ahead of schedule following faults recently experienced in this section of the network.

“Our team is committed to proactively limiting the frequency and potential impact of any water main leak or break on our customers, and we’ve worked swiftly to bring this replacement forward ahead of schedule to minimise the potential for further interruptions to the area’s water supply,” Mark said.

“The new pipes will be made of PVC, which are more flexible and resistant to underground movement compared to cast iron and fibro-cement pipes.

“New water pipes traditionally have a lifespan of approximately 100 years, which ensures this main replacement will help us continue providing world class water services to our customers in the New Town area well into the future.”

Commencing from Monday September 9, the upgrade is expected to take around six weeks to complete with works typically occurring between Monday to Thursday from 7am to 5pm.

“For the safety of our people and residents in the area, we ask road users to please take note of any localised traffic management put in place while the works are completed,” Mark said.

“We will ensure local residents are notified of any temporary water supply interruptions that are necessary when their connections are moved over from the old to new pipes.”
