New Murray Bridge main to improve water services

Around 700 metres of water main in Murray Bridge is set to be replaced over the coming weeks as part of efforts by SA Water to continually improve services for customers.

The works, which will install new pipes along sections of Verdun Road and Edwards Street, are part of SA Water’s $137 million investment to replace around 375,000 meters of water mains across the state between 2016 and 2020.

SA Water’s General Manager of Asset Operations and Delivery Mark Gobbie said the installation of new PVC pipes, which are flexible and more resistant to movement than cast iron and fibro-cement pipes, has been eyed off as a priority project.

“With a lifespan of approximately 100 years for new water main pipes, this ensures the work being done will allow us to continue providing world class water services to our customers well into the future,” Mark said.

“While environmental factors like soil movement and weather make it difficult to stop leaks and breaks from occurring, we are committed to taking a proactive approach in limiting their frequency and any impact it has on our customers.

“This is one of many water main replacements SA Water is undertaking in 2019, and we look forward to continuing our investment in communities right across the state.”

Working together with Fleurieu Civil, the upgrade is expected to take around six weeks to complete with works typically occurring between Monday to Friday from 7am to 5pm.  

“For the safety of our people and commuters in the area, we ask residents and users of Verdun Road and Edwards Street to please take note of the localised traffic management in place while the works are being completed,” Mark said.

“We will also ensure local residents are notified of any temporary water supply interruptions that are necessary when we move their connections over from the old to new pipes.”
