There's no river in sight for miles and miles, but thanks to a reliable source of water from an underground aquifer, homes and businesses in Mount Burr always have safe drinking water on tap.
The natural filter power of the limestone aquifer that the town's water flows through means the only man-made treatment Mount Burr's drinking water requires is a quick 10 minute disinfection process with a small amount of chlorine to kill any microorganisms that might be lurking unseen.
Once the water is treated and ready to use, it's stored in a concrete surface tank before being gravity fed through SA Water's pipe network into customers' homes and businesses across the town.
The Mount Burr water supply system is one of 14 borefields operated by SA Water in the state's South East. Last year, the Mount Burr borefield produced 22.5 million litres of the 71,335 million litres of drinking water SA Water supplied to regional South Australia.
SA Water’s Senior Manager of Production and Treatment Lisa Hannant said a reliable supply of safe, clean water is vital for community health and wellbeing, and is SA Water’s top priority.
"We take pride in making sure our customers have safe, clean and clear drinking water every time they turn on their tap," Lisa said.
"SA Water’s comprehensive water testing regime ensures quality is maintained throughout the production process and water provided to customers complies with the Australian Drinking Water Guidelines.
"Customers are at the heart of everything we do, and managing and monitoring the processes to deliver safe drinking water is a major focus of our work at Mount Burr and across the state.
"Our expert employees collect and analyse more than 250,000 water samples each year from a variety of locations, from catchment to tap."
Water samples are tested in the field and by scientists at SA Water’s world-leading laboratories in Adelaide.
