King William Road water main relocation complete

SA Water has completed works to move a 200-metre-length of water main under King William Road to support the City of Unley’s redevelopment of the precinct, which is now underway.

The pipe was repositioned from the eastern side towards the centre of King William Road, so the council can install new kerbing and allow SA Water crews continued safe access to the water network for any future maintenance.

SA Water’s Senior Manager of Customer and Community Engagement Matthew Bonnett said going into engagement with the local community, SA Water recognised the high social and economic value the area provides.

“We took the time to understand the needs of traders and residents and, based on their feedback, were able to minimise impacts from our works, while maintaining safety for our crew and people travelling through the area,” Matthew said.

“With our contractor BTR Excavations, we developed a work schedule and methodology which supported business as usual for the traders.

“In the early stage of works, we excavated the road during the day, between peak traffic periods, to allow overnight pipe laying to occur more quickly and with less noise, minimising impact on residents.

“The remainder of the works occurred overnight, avoiding peak trade periods for local cafes and restaurants on Friday and Saturday nights, and a temporary bitumen seal was laid over the excavated areas at the end of each night, allowing for free-flowing traffic during the day.

“Despite some rainfall, we were able to complete the project on time, with swift progress each night relocating the main section by section, as well as carrying out other associated works such as reconnecting and lowering customer connections.

“We also worked with businesses to schedule temporary water interruptions which were required on occasion during our works, to allow the main to be isolated and safely moved. Notification letters were sent in advance to all affected properties.

“Open communication and accounting for resident and business needs were key to successful delivery of this project and we appreciate everyone’s patience and understanding as we worked to finish construction with as little disruption as possible.”
