Dam good partnership to learn about Yorke water

Residents and visitors of the Yorke Peninsula can soon learn about the Yorke Valley Dam and region's water history thanks to a new interactive road stop supported by SA Water's 2019 Community Partnerships Program.

Partnering with the Maitland & District Progress Association, just under $10,000 has been provided to help develop a sheltered display, interpretive walk, picnic facilities and other water-related items for display.

SA Water's $75,000 Community Partnerships Program supports local community groups deliver events and projects that aim to foster a better life in local communities across regional and metropolitan South Australia.

SA Water's General Manager Customers, Strategy and Innovation Anna Jackson said the exciting project is a deserving recipient for looking to provide a fun education experience for the local community.

"Maitland is a popular town for people passing through as they head down the Yorke Peninsula, but many may not be aware of the rich history of water and its importance to local industry and economic development," Anna said.

"This display and interpretive trail is a great way to educate passers-by about the history of water for the region's early settlers, the establishment of mains water in the area and other future industry initiatives like desalination and renewable energy.

"We look forward to working with the Maitland & District Progress Association to see this site be revamped over the coming months."

The project is one of 11 successful recipients of this year's Community Partnerships Program, which saw overwhelming interest from community groups with programs involving water or water use for a better life.

"We had more than double the amount of applications than for our 2018 program and narrowing the field down to our final list of projects was tough given the amazing range of community groups and events," Anna said.

"It's clear that so many of our customers have amazing ideas and events that make a difference to the lives of others in the community, and we can't wait to support this group of worthy recipients throughout the next year as their events come to fruition."
