Collaboration sees Pirie sporting new odour dome

The collaboration of SA Water and the Port Pirie Regional Council has helped ensure the success of the town’s reinvigorated Memorial Oval sporting complex, thanks to the installation of an innovative fibreglass dome over the site’s wastewater ventilation.

It’s one of several contributions from SA Water to Council’s exciting $25 million project to revitalise the town’s sporting precinct.

SA Water’s Manager of Customer Field Services North Darren Walker said crews were experienced at project elements like relocating the site’s existing wastewater main to make way for the new swimming pool, and installing two new fire services.

“However, with the oval’s proposed two-storey function centre to be built just 15 metres from an existing wastewater vent, our Port Pirie depot and Crystal Brook workshop project team had to find an innovative solution to ensure visitor comfort,” he said.

“The vent allows natural gases formed in the wastewater network to safely dissipate, but sitting at a similar height to the centre’s balcony meant there was potential for odour to impact visitors in hot weather and obscure the view."

After assessing odour and visual amenity, a unique 3-foot green fibreglass dome which uses charcoal to filter odour and gas from the wastewater system, proved the best solution.

“With a similar filter recently installed at one of our wastewater sites in Adelaide, we already know this is a highly-effective method of managing odour,” Darren said.

"Council has also done a great job installing a timber fence around the perimeter of the dome, which has helped screen the facility while still providing full and easy access to maintain the equipment."

The newly-installed dome is already proving a success in combatting odour for the complex's patrons, Including the recently sold-out AFL match between the Adelaide Crows and Port Adelaide Football Club played in 40-plus degree temperatures.

"Working closely with Council, having early discussions and understanding what we each needed to achieve was key to delivering the best technical solution, and great outcomes for the complex and its thousands of visitors every year."
