Cody sparks bright future for SA Water’s Berri workshop

Fabrication tradesperson and Loxton man Cody Heinrich has built a reputation as one of SA Water's rising stars, after taking out the Engineering Industry Award and being named runner-up for 2017 Apprentice of the Year at the Rotary Club of Berri's recent Riverland and Mallee Vocational Awards.  

Originally from Wunkar, 21 year old Cody's summer of success follows a bronze medal win at TAFE SA's Regional WorldSkills Competition in August 2017.

Through Cody's success, his employer is reaping the rewards of its apprenticeship program by building a strong and stable base of tradespeople for SA Water in the Riverland and throughout South Australia.

Cody's supervisor, Fabrication Team Leader Simon Ferber, said SA Water's approach to apprenticeships provides high quality training and a pathway into meaningful employment for school leavers.

"Our apprenticeships give young people from the Riverland the opportunity to stay in the area and help deliver essential services to their local communities," Simon said.

Like many of SA Water's trades’ apprentices, Cody joined SA Water straight from high school and completed a rigorous four-year traineeship before earning a full-time, permanent role in the fabrication team.

"It's been an amazing opportunity to learn a trade from skilled and experienced colleagues and to stay in my home community while I've been working and learning," Cody said.

"I'm honoured to win these vocational awards - the recognition has been the icing on the cake for me."

Despite his accomplishments Cody will not be resting on his laurels any time soon.

"My plans from here are to keep achieving. I'm planning to complete my welder’s certificate and add to my high risk licences,” Cody said.

Outside of work, Cody is living life in the fast lane too, racing speedway cars with his brothers and Dad, and waterskiing on the River Murray in his spare time.
