Keeping the kids clean and hydrated during a visit to Adelaide Zoo’s new Variety Children’s Zoo is an udder breeze, with SA Water’s new drinking fountain and handwash stations helping visitors fill up and wash up after patting the animals.
Located within the new play space, the fountain and handwash stations were put through their paces during a bumper opening two weeks which saw more than 32,000 visitors pass through Adelaide Zoo’s gates.
SA Water and Adelaide Zoo staff were also on hand to give out reusable BYOB water bottles for a $2 donation – raising $430 to help provide new enrichment toys for the animals.
Zoos SA Chief Executive Elaine Bensted said the addition of SA Water’s amenities boosts the experience and shines a light on sustainability.
“Our latest play space is filled with interactive areas allowing kids to get closer than ever to nature, so providing a space to wash up is important to ensuring their hygiene,” Elaine said.
“The drinking fountains are fantastic and we now have them across both our zoos to enhance visitor experience and inspire sustainable behaviour.
“We’re grateful for SA Water’s ongoing support and our cheeky goats are excited to show off their balancing skills on the new seesaw made possible with the funds raised from the reusable BYOB bottles!”
SA Water’s specialised engineering service, Water Engineering Technologies, custom-fabricated the three new handwash stations at its Berri workshop.
SA Water General Manager Customers, Strategy and Innovation Anna Jackson said the new fountain enables a healthy habit at one of Adelaide’s most iconic attractions.
“Having a fountain at Adelaide Zoo is an excellent opportunity to promote the many benefits of tap water – it’s one of the best decisions you can make for your health, your budget and the environment,” Anna said.
“With around 370 million single-use plastic water bottles making their way to landfill each year in Australia, we’re working to provide convenient places to refill and help South Australians continue leading the way in reducing plastic waste.
“Remember to bring your own reusable bottle to the zoo and fill up for free before mixing with the animals and building on your connection with nature.”
SA Water is a major partner of Zoos SA, helping connect people with nature and working closely with the conservation charity to enhance water consumption efficiency through smart metering technology.
Zoos SA joins a growing network of organisations and venues, including the Adelaide Showground and 11 councils across the state, who are partnering with SA Water to install 30 smart water fountains.
