Construction of the $60 million Bird in Hand wastewater treatment plant upgrade has started.
Since 1965, wastewater from Lobethal, Woodside and Inverbrackie has been treated at the Bird in Hand wastewater treatment plant located along Bird in Hand Road, Woodside. The plant uses a ten lagoon system to treat the wastewater by a natural process before discharging into Dawesley Creek.
The upgrade will provide a sustainable long-term treatment facility for the area, catering for predicted growth for the next 25 years. It will also create benefits for the local Dawesley Creek and surrounding environment.
Construction commenced in March and signalled the culmination of four years of planning involving SA Water, the community and other stakeholders.
The first stage of earth works is complete with the focus now on building structures. The following provides the anticipated start dates for the key components of construction:
- Bulk earthworks – March 2010
- Structures and site works – April 2010
- Mechanical installation – October 2010
- Electrical installation – January 2011
- Plant commissioning – June 2011
It is anticipated that the new wastewater treatment plant will be operating by the end of 2011 with the balance of works complete by mid 2012.
Further information about the project is available through our newsletters and media releases.
